Introduction

Welcome to the Newborn Care unit of the Maternity Series.

This resource consists of seven learning modules on newborn nursing care. In the accompanying simulation game ("game"), learners will work through concepts related to both postpartum and newborn care.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

• Describe a holistic approach to newborn care.
• Evaluate the newborn’s transition to extrauterine life.
• Assess and evaluate the physiological and behavioural adaptations of the newborn while identifying normal and abnormal variations.
• Discuss approaches to newborn nutrition, including breastfeeding and bottle-feeding.
• Create individualized nursing strategies for family-centred teaching to ensure safe and appropriate newborn care.
